Weft Hair Extensions 101

Weft extensions are a type of hair extension made from real or synthetic hair sewn onto a strip of fabric, known as a “weft.” This method is very popular as it allows for various attachment techniques, making them versatile for different hair types and styles.

Types of Weft Hair Extensions

Hand-tied Wefts

Hand-tied weft extensions are popular, especially for those with fine to medium hair. These extensions are thinner than machine-sewn wefts, providing perfect density and high-quality hair selection due to being tied onto a tiny string. This makes them effective for fine hair, although they can be used on any hair type. Hand-tied wefts are made from 100% human hair and often retain their natural cuticles, giving them a natural bounce, shine, and elasticity.

Installation of Hand Tied Wefts

The installation process for hand-tied wefts is relatively quick, typically taking a few hours. However, stylists cannot cut hand-tied tracks without causing the string to unravel, leading to hair falling out. For thick hair, multiple wefts need to be stacked due to the fine tracks. A skilled stylist is essential to ensure the best results.

Cost

Hand-tied weft extensions are more expensive than other types due to the time and skill required for installation. Producing them is labour-intensive, taking up to 8 to 10 hours for a full set.

Pros and Cons of Hand-Tied Wefts

Pros:

  • Thinner than machine-sewn wefts, ideal for fine hair.
  • Made from 100% human hair, retaining natural cuticles.
  • Quick installation process.
  • Can last up to 6 to 8 weeks with proper care.

Cons:

  • Less durable, with a tendency to shed more from the track.
  • Require frequent replacement.
  • Return hair can be uncomfortable and itchy on the scalp.
  • Cannot be cut without unravelling.
  • More visible if hair is pulled back or styled in a high ponytail.
  • Higher cost due to time and skill required for installation.

Machine Sewn Wefts

Machine-sewn wefts are a good choice for those seeking affordable and quick hair extensions. They consist of hair sewn into a thin strip of fabric and are typically acid-washed to remove cuticles. If made using Remy human hair (which we do at Bablu Hair Haus), they closely match the look and feel of natural strands.

Installation

Machine-sewn wefts take only a few hours to install. However, they tend to be bulky at the top, making them less tricky for thin hair. The density of hair on these wefts is sparser compared to hand-tied and hybrid “genius” wefts, often requiring them to be doubled or stacked. Proper placement by a skilled stylist is crucial to avoid damage and ensure the best results.
